How to Play Luidius
Quick start
Use SELECT at the title screen to choose one or two players, then press START. Move continuously with the D-pad and hold or tap A to clear enemy waves before they surround the ship. Orange power capsules advance the highlight along the upgrade meter; press B only when the highlight reaches the upgrade you actually need. Begin with one or two Speed Ups, then prioritize Missiles and either Double or Laser before adding Options and a Shield. Avoid collecting capsules blindly, because the meter wraps and activating the wrong slot can delay a vital defense. The Luigi and Mario-themed graphics do not change the original stage hazards, so learn safe routes around terrain and destroy boss cores only after they become vulnerable.
Controls
D-pad: maneuver the Luigi-themed craft in all directions. A: fire the equipped weapons. B: activate the currently highlighted power-up on the meter; upgraded missiles, Double, or Laser continue to fire through the normal weapon input. SELECT: choose one-player or alternating two-player mode on the title screen; no standard in-stage function is documented. START: begin the selected game and pause or resume during play.
Luidius — About this game
Luidius is KZ-S's version 1.0 graphics hack for the NES release of Gradius, published in 1999. It replaces the Vic Viper's presentation with a craft built around Luigi's head and redraws enemies with motifs drawn from the Mario series, turning Konami's space campaign into a playful crossover-style reskin. The documented project scope is visual rather than a rules overhaul, so the underlying challenge remains Gradius: steer through automatically scrolling stages, destroy enemy formations, collect power capsules, and press the power-up button when the desired slot on the upgrade meter is lit. Speed upgrades, missiles, Double or Laser, Options, and shields must be chosen in a useful order, because losing a craft removes accumulated equipment. Two-player mode alternates turns rather than placing both ships on screen together. The available hack record does not prove a unique source-ROM region or revision, so this entry describes only the verified graphics changes and the shared NES gameplay.
