How to Play Legend of Zelda, The

Quick start

Register a name, begin the quest and search nearby for a sword before roaming farther across Hyrule. Attack with A. Press START to open the subscreen, choose an acquired item with Left or Right, then use it with B on the main screen. Avoid being surrounded because enemy contact and attacks reduce the heart meter; collect hearts and heart containers to stay alive. In dungeons, look for keys, maps and compasses, and test suspicious walls with bombs. Keep an eye on Rupees, keys and bomb supplies, buying useful equipment from shops when needed. Your central goal is to claim one Triforce fragment from each of eight dungeons so that Link can enter Death Mountain.

Controls

D-pad: move Link in four directions; on the subscreen, choose the equipped item. A: attack with the sword and confirm selections. B: use the currently equipped item. START: display the subscreen and confirm. SELECT: pause and move through menu choices.

Legend of Zelda, The — About this game

The Legend of Zelda is an open-ended NES action adventure built around a vast overworld and hidden underground dungeons. Link searches Hyrule for dungeon entrances, opens locked doors, studies maps and compasses, solves environmental obstacles and fights monsters to recover the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom. The sword handles direct combat, while equippable tools such as bombs, boomerangs and the bow provide different solutions. Hearts determine survival, Rupees purchase useful supplies, and keys and bombs must be managed while exploring. Completing the Triforce opens the way to Death Mountain, where Ganon must be defeated before Princess Zelda can be rescued.
