How to Play After Burner

Quick start

Press Start to launch. Use A's unlimited Vulcan fire for enemies already in the small gunsight, and wait for the lock-on frame before spending a B missile. Missiles are limited, so do not fire after a target has nearly left the screen. To evade a dense attack, press Left or Right to bank, then immediately tap the opposite direction for a roll. Start activates the afterburner during flight and can open distance from an attack; Select pauses. Watch the HUD for off-screen radar blips and turn toward them before they enter firing range.

Controls

D-Pad: move the aircraft. To roll, bank Left or Right and immediately press the opposite direction. A: fire the unlimited Vulcan cannon. B: launch a limited air-to-air guided missile after lock-on. Start: begin the game; during flight, activate the afterburner. Select: pause and resume.

After Burner — About this game

After Burner brings Sega's rapid pseudo-3D air combat to the Famicom/NES format. The player pilots an F-14 through 23 stages of fighters, helicopters, missiles and tracers while seeking plans at two landing fields before returning to the carrier. The Vulcan cannon is unlimited but requires manual aim; guided missiles lock on more broadly but use a limited stock. Survival depends on moving continuously, performing quick rolls by reversing horizontal direction, and triggering the afterburner to escape pressure rather than relying on firepower alone.
