Senjou no Ookami (Japan) sends Super Joe through a vertically advancing battlefield with a rifle and a limited supply of grenades. The gun fires in the direction he faces, but grenades always travel toward the top of the screen, making the two weapons useful from different positions. A grenade can reach past an obstacle or catch several soldiers, while ordinary fire handles a continuing approach. At the end of a stage, the scrolling stops for a final group emerging from a gate or fortress. Prisoners moving through the battle offer rescue opportunities, but the player must still keep an escape route from the incoming fire.
