How to Play Donkey Kong (Japan set 1)
Quick start
- Move toward a ladder while watching the next barrel or fireball.
- Jump hazards only when there is a safe landing.
- Take a hammer when its temporary loss of jumping and climbing will not trap the route.
- On the rivet screen, remove all eight supports before the bonus counter runs out.
Controls
Left and right move Mario along platforms; Up and Down climb ladders when positioned at one. Jump clears obstacles and gaps. While carrying an active hammer, Mario cannot jump or climb ladders.

Donkey Kong (Japan set 1) turns a construction site into a series of different climbing problems. Mario crosses girders, climbs ladders and jumps hazards to reach Pauline, with the falling bonus counter imposing a time limit. The arcade’s four screen designs introduce barrels, conveyors, elevators and removable rivets rather than repeating one obstacle throughout. A hammer can destroy some threats, but taking it temporarily prevents jumping and ladder climbing, so it can also block a planned route. On the rivet screen, remove the eight supports to bring Donkey Kong down. Surviving the first rescue leads into another, more demanding cycle.
