GunNail (28th May. 1992) ties its vertical shooting to a shrinking shield reserve. Taking a hit removes protection instead of immediately ending the run, but fewer shields also improve the scoring multiplier and the strength available from weapon pickups. The weakest defensive position can therefore be the most rewarding one, provided the next hit is avoided. Different weapon types and accompanying ships change the coverage against enemy formations, while bombs offer another way through a dangerous pattern. The player must balance preserving the run with the increased rewards of surviving near failure.
