How to Play Athena
Quick start
Move carefully through the opening forest and use B's kick to break nearby blocks until a proper weapon appears. Take armor and shields early, but pause before collecting unfamiliar jars because some items are poisonous or replace a useful weapon. Tap A for low obstacles and hold it for a higher jump. Preserve ranged equipment by attacking from the edge of its reach, and keep moving because the timer can end a life even when the health gauge is safe. In water or aerial areas, protect the transformation item that makes navigation possible rather than chasing every optional block.
Controls
D-Pad Left/Right: move; Up/Down: climb ladders; Down: crouch. A: jump, with a longer hold producing a higher jump. B: attack with the equipped weapon, or kick while unarmed. Start: begin and pause/resume. Select has no verified normal gameplay function. Flight and mermaid sections retain the basic D-Pad movement and B attack scheme.
Athena — About this game
Athena for Famicom follows the Victory Kingdom princess into a dangerous fantasy realm divided into eight stages: forest, cave, sea, sky, ice, hell, maze and the final world. Athena begins with a short kick, then breaks blocks and defeats enemies to uncover melee weapons, bows, shields and progressively stronger armor. Special equipment grants flight or a mermaid form needed for different environments. Every stage combines a life gauge with a time limit, and careless pickups can be harmful as well as helpful. The final world revisits earlier bosses before the confrontation with Emperor Dante.
