How to Play Baseball
Quick start
On the title screen, use SELECT to choose the number of players and START to open team selection. Move left or right and press A. Both players must confirm in a two-player match; player 1 bats first. Start by learning the timing of a held-A swing and a short, interrupted swing for a bunt. Once a ball is caught, throw promptly to the useful base. Do not send every runner on a high fly: choose them with the directional pad and call them back with A when necessary.
Controls
START starts play or toggles pause; SELECT switches the title-screen mode. Team selection uses left/right and A. At bat, move within the box with the D-pad and hold A for a swing; releasing A stops the bat partway. On the mound, A pitches, up+A slows the delivery, down+A makes it fast, and left/right+A chooses a breaking ball. B with right/up/left throws a pick-off to first/second/third. After fielding, A or B plus right/up/left/down throws to first/second/third/home; without a direction it goes to first. On offence, right/up/left selects the runner at first/second/third and down selects everyone: B orders an advance, A a return. Fielding movement is automatic; player 2 uses the second controller.
Baseball — About this game
Each match in Baseball turns on small decisions: whether to chase a pitch, send a runner or throw across the diamond for an out. There are six teams and two ways to play, against the computer or a second player. The fielders retrieve the ball automatically, so defensive play concentrates on pitching and choosing a destination for the next throw. Batting and base running remain separate responsibilities; a good hit is only useful if you judge the runners' chances sensibly. Nine innings decide the result, with no extra innings after a draw. This American NES version labels its teams A, C, D, P, R and Y.
