How to Play Battle Chess

Quick start

Choose 2D pieces while learning because the board is easier to read, then select a low computer level. Move the cursor with the D-pad, press A on your piece and A again on its destination; press B to cancel before the move is committed. Open the options with Select if you need a hint, want to undo, or wish to switch the display. Before every move, check whether your king is attacked and whether the destination leaves it exposed.

Controls

The D-pad moves the board cursor and changes menu choices. A selects a piece, confirms its destination and accepts menu options. B cancels a selected move before it is completed or backs out of an option. SELECT opens the command/options menu during a game. START begins play from setup screens. The same cursor controls apply to both the animated 3D board and the 2D view.

Battle Chess — About this game

Battle Chess brings standard chess to NES with a theatrical 3D board where every capture becomes a character animation. It also offers a conventional 2D piece set for clearer calculation. Players can face the computer at several difficulty levels, share the controller for a two-player match, or watch the computer play itself. Menu options include legal-move help, undo, replay, board setup and switching viewpoints. Beneath the spectacle, ordinary chess rules still apply, including castling, en passant, promotion, check and checkmate.
