After visiting John and his friends, Matthias collapses on the way home and enters the first battle with Fidem and his men who try to take her away in the church. On the placement screen, place your vanguard in the enemy's path, and in battle select attacks and magic after moving. Don't isolate them, focus on defeating them one by one, and save the blood soul and BP for stronger enemies. Check the victory conditions, sortie members, and equipment each time before starting the battle.

Use the cross button to select the map cursor, people, and menu items. Press A to decide, send conversation, select unit, and confirm movement destination/attack target. Press B to cancel/go back one step. START starts a battle or opens the system menu/pause. In battle, select a unit with A, execute "move", "attack", "magic", "standby", etc. with the cross button and A, and reselect with B before taking action. The shoulder buttons and SELECT are used to switch information that displays guidance on the screen.
