How to Play Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Quick start
Begin a new game and follow Jonathan right into the castle. Collect the Change Cube, climb the platforms and collect the Call Cube. Stand at the opening switch and press A to call Charlotte so both characters provide enough weight to lower the bridges. Continue right, learn Y attacks and B jumps, then explore the lower branch for the first save room; press up at the statue to save.
Controls
Default DS controls: D-pad moves; B jumps; Y attacks; L backdashes. After acquiring the corresponding relics, X switches characters and A calls or dismisses the partner. Up+Y uses the equipped sub-weapon or spell; R activates the visible partner's equipped skill. Down+B drops through thin platforms; sliding requires its relic. Up+X activates an equipped Dual Crush when sufficient MP is available. START opens the menu.
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin — About this game
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin builds its exploration around two heroes with complementary strengths. Jonathan fights with weapons and sub-weapons, while Charlotte brings powerful spells. You can switch the controlled character, call the partner into battle or keep one hero out of danger, changing tactics without leaving the room. New relics expand the pair's movement and cooperation, making earlier obstacles worth revisiting. The castle also contains paintings that lead into separate areas, adding varied settings beyond its corridors. Equipment, spells and shared attacks give different ways to handle enemies, but the magic gauge limits how freely those tools can be used. Learning when to fight together and when to act alone is central to advancing through the castle and its painted worlds.
