How to Play Dirty Harry

Quick start

Move right from the opening street and use the manhole area as a safer firing position against the first enemies. Press A once to draw and aim, adjust the angle with the D-pad, then press A again to shoot. Enter the first building, search rooms for ammunition and crowbars, and remember which doors and corridors you have used because the opening stage is a large maze. Save special equipment for its intended obstacle, watch for pits and toxic hazards, and avoid any room marked by the notorious HA HA HA trap because it cannot be exited.

Controls

D-pad Left/Right: walk, turn, climb laterally where applicable, or choose an inventory item. D-pad Up: climb, enter doors or alleys, move into connecting corridors, and angle an aimed weapon upward. D-pad Down: climb down, crouch, enter lower passages, or angle an aimed weapon downward. A: draw/aim a weapon, then fire with a second press; in rooms it can place plastic explosives. B: punch. Up+B: kick or break open certain furniture and crates. A+B: jump; add Left or Right to jump in that direction. START: open the inventory/pause screen and return to play.

Dirty Harry — About this game

Dirty Harry is a single-player action-adventure game built around exploration as much as combat. Harry Callahan crosses San Francisco streets, alleys, buildings, corridors, docks, and sewers while pursuing the Anaconda and his gang. Progress depends on learning a dense map, entering doors, operating switches, opening containers, and collecting ammunition, crowbars, explosives, protective gear, and other useful items. Harry can punch, kick, jump, crouch, climb, and aim his handgun in several directions, with additional weapons selected from an inventory screen. Environmental hazards and an infamous inescapable room make careful route choices especially important.
