How to Play Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
Quick start
Create the hero, then complete the DS prologue by speaking to people in the village and returning home for the family meal. Chapter 1 then gives you Ragnar. Listen to the king of Burland about the missing children, search the castle for supplies and head out to investigate. Rotate the camera to check corners, equip useful items and visit a church to save before travelling far.
Controls
DS buttons: D-pad moves the party and menu cursor; A talks, examines and confirms; X opens the main menu and confirms choices; B cancels. Y shows area information or expands the map where available. L/R rotate the view in supported locations; L+R resets the angle. In battle, choose a command and target from the menus with the D-pad and A. Save by speaking to a priest or nun and choosing the save/confession option.

Dragon Quest IV introduces its future party through separate chapters, giving each adventure its own lead character and immediate goal. Ragnar investigates missing children, Alena seeks a life beyond the castle, and Torneko's journey puts trade at the centre of an RPG chapter. Their experiences eventually connect with the hero's wider quest. Battles use selected commands, with equipment, healing and party composition providing the preparation behind each victory. The DS version combines character sprites with rotatable environments and opens with a short hero prologue before the companion chapters, helping establish the village and the larger story.
