How to Play Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Quick start
Choose Create a new adventure log and set the hero's appearance and name. Follow Aquila through the opening scene and first battle; choose Attack and a target when your turn arrives. Back at the Observatory, speak to the Celestrians and follow directions to Apus Major. Visit Yggdrasil at the top and offer the benevolessence. Follow the next instructions before expecting to recruit a full party or join cooperative adventures.
Controls
DS controls: D-pad moves and selects; A talks, examines and confirms; X opens the menu; B cancels. Y shows the world map and Story So Far. L/R rotate the view in supported towns, and L+R resets it. The Touch Screen also supports movement and displayed menu commands. In battle, choose commands and targets with the D-pad and A. B with a direction performs assigned party tricks outside battle. Save by confessing at a church.

Dragon Quest IX lets you create the guardian at the heart of its story, choosing an appearance before beginning among the Celestrians. Events soon lead toward a wider human world, where party creation, equipment and later vocation choices shape your approach to command battles. Monsters can be seen while exploring, giving encounters a different rhythm from the random battles of earlier entries. Side quests and treasure maps extend the journey beyond the main route. The original DS release also included local cooperative adventuring with other players, alongside a solo quest with created companions. The opening begins with your guardian and mentor, before those broader party systems are introduced.
