How to Play Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
Quick start
Name the hero and follow the opening to the ship. Explore all decks and speak to everyone, including the captain and the person near the bath. When the ship docks, return to the cabin beneath the mast and talk to Pankraz, then disembark. Follow your father on the first land journey; use the early fights to learn Attack and healing items. Monster recruitment comes later.
Controls
DS buttons: D-pad moves the party and menu cursor; A talks, examines and confirms; X opens the main menu and confirms choices; B cancels. Y shows area information or expands the map where available. L/R rotate the view in supported locations; L+R resets the angle. In battle, choose a command and target from the menus with the D-pad and A. Save by speaking to a priest or nun and choosing the save/confession option.

Dragon Quest V follows its hero across different stages of life, beginning with childhood travels beside Pankraz. Familiar places and people gain new meaning as the years pass, while family choices become part of the journey. Later, certain defeated monsters can join the party, adding unusual abilities alongside human companions. Command battles make that mix of allies, equipment and healing resources important. The DS remake presents the world across both screens and adds another marriage option to the story. Its opening deliberately keeps you a child following your father, before the broader systems and responsibilities arrive.
