How to Play Dragon Wars
Quick start
Explore Purgatory one square at a time and check SELECT's automap frequently so corridors do not blur together. Equip every useful weapon and armor piece after finding it. In battle, read the displayed range before choosing attacks; at range two or greater, use Approach or a suitable ranged option instead of wasting a melee turn. Keep durable fighters in front and vulnerable casters behind, and spread early advancement points across complementary survival, exploration, weapon and healing skills rather than making every character identical.
Controls
In the 3D view, D-pad Up moves forward, Down turns around, and Left/Right rotate in place. In menus, the D-pad moves the cursor. A confirms and can switch between command and message displays. B cancels. START switches between command and message displays. SELECT opens the automap. Battle choices are selected with the D-pad and confirmed with A.
Dragon Wars — About this game
Dragon Wars is the Japanese Famicom adaptation of Interplay's party-based first-person role-playing game. The heroes arrive in Dilmun only to be stripped of their possessions and thrown into the slums of Purgatory, where they must rebuild before opposing the wizard Namtar. Exploration uses a step-based 3D view and automap, while character growth lets the player allocate earned points among attributes, weapon training, knowledge, and magic skills. Turn-based battles emphasize range: ordinary melee attacks may miss distant groups, so the party must approach, use longer-reaching weapons or spells, rearrange front and back rows, defend, or attempt escape before confirming each round.
