How to Play Gauntlet
Quick start
Choose one or two players, then select a hero with the D-pad and confirm with A. Beginners can start with the Warrior or Valkyrie for stronger armor and direct combat. Move through the first maze while holding A and pressing a direction to fire into approaching enemies or generators. Touch keys before locked doors, collect food before shooting near it, and save B-button bombs for crowded screens or Death. Find the labeled exit rather than clearing every enemy. Pause with START and copy the displayed password before stopping, since it carries your hero and campaign progress forward.
Controls
D-pad: move; while holding A, choose the firing direction; move into nearby enemies for hand-to-hand combat. A: fire the hero's ranged weapon and confirm the selected character. B: detonate a carried bomb potion. START: open the game menu or pause/resume during play. SELECT: choose one- or two-player mode on the menu.
Gauntlet — About this game
Gauntlet for NES turns the arcade dungeon crawl into a one- or two-player quest with a defined campaign. Thor, Thyra, Merlin, and Questor differ in movement speed, armor, shot strength, melee power, and magic, making character choice part of the strategy. Every room asks you to destroy or evade streams of monsters, collect keys, food, treasure, and bomb potions, and reach an exit before dwindling health becomes a crisis. Treasure rooms restore power when escaped in time, clue rooms reveal pieces of the final combination, and branching world maps reward noting which exits connect. A password shown on the pause screen preserves the character, treasure, upgrades, and progress after completed treasure rooms.
