Quick start
Select 1 PLAYER with SELECT or the D-pad and start with START. Choose a map and one of the two lower balls. Use the D-pad to choose the quiz answer and A to confirm. Spend small and large movement values with the next branch in mind.
Controls
D-pad: move, choose answers and balls. A: confirm an answer and advance the game. B is unused. START begins the game or shows the map in solo mode; SELECT chooses the mode. The character cannot walk backwards.

Hatena explores maps inspired by Capcom games, answering quizzes to advance toward each area's boss. The numbered balls are part of the route planning: a correct answer moves you by the value of the chosen ball, and only the lower pair in the display is available until one is used. Clear the six starting maps to reveal a seventh challenge against the Quiz Master. A linked two-player match gives Hatena and Satena competing routes to the boss. Reading the question is only half the contest; deciding which movement value to spend can change where you arrive next.
