How to Play Populous
Quick start
Choose Tutorial first. Locate a friendly settlement, level the nearby land to help it grow, then open the icon screen to inspect commands before spending manna on attacks.
Controls
D-pad moves the cursor. In terrain mode, A+Up/Down raises/lowers land; B+Up/Down changes a larger area. START opens the icon screen; D-pad and A select commands. SELECT opens the world map; A returns at the chosen location.

Flatten land so followers can farm and expand settlements, then spend their manna on disasters, knights and the beacon that guides their leader. Conquest advances through increasingly difficult worlds, while Tutorial provides a safer place to learn the icon-driven commands. Choose Tutorial first.
