How to Play R-Type
Quick start
Choose Easy and watch the first enemy waves. Destroy a POW shuttle to obtain the pod, test launching and recalling it, and charge a beam before a tougher target arrives.
Controls
D-pad moves the ship. B fires; hold B to charge the beam, then release. A launches or recalls the Power Pod. START starts/pauses. On the title options, SELECT changes music, sound and difficulty settings.

R-Type sends a small spacecraft against the Bydo Empire in a side-scrolling shooter built around the detachable Power Pod. Attach the pod in front or behind for protection, launch it into an awkward firing position, and charge the ship’s beam for a stronger shot. Surviving depends on enemy patterns and pod placement as well as dodging. Choose Easy and watch the first enemy waves. Destroy a POW shuttle to obtain the pod, test launching and recalling it, and charge a beam before a tougher target arrives.
