How to Play Pokémon Crystal Version
Quick start
Choose NEW GAME, select a boy or girl, set the clock and name your character. Go downstairs and speak to Mom to receive the Pokégear and set the weekday. Visit Professor Elm’s laboratory and choose Chikorita, Cyndaquil or Totodile. Head west along Route 29 to Cherrygrove City, then north toward Mr. Pokémon’s house on Route 30. Deliver his Mystery Egg back to Elm; after the rival encounter and laboratory scene, get the Poké Balls from the aide and begin catching Pokémon.
Controls
D-pad: walk and move the menu cursor. A: talk, inspect, confirm and advance dialogue. B: cancel or close a menu. START: open the main menu for your party, Pack and SAVE. SELECT: use an item registered for quick access; it also helps rearrange items or moves in the relevant menu. In battle, select FIGHT and a move with A, or switch Pokémon and use items through their commands.

Your journey begins in New Bark Town, where Professor Elm entrusts you with a first partner Pokémon. Routes, towns and caves connect an adventure built around catching wild Pokémon, training a party and defeating Gym Leaders. Battles use a menu of moves, items, switching and escape, so type matchups and the remaining PP of each move matter more than quick reflexes. The day and night cycle changes parts of the world, and the Pokégear keeps useful information close at hand. Recover at Pokémon Centers and save from the main menu as you work toward the League. Crystal expands the Gold and Silver adventure with a choice of male or female protagonist, animated Pokémon battle entrances and a story thread following Suicune and the mysterious Eusine.
