Begin with Forest Friends and let Barney’s prompts set the pace. Move left or right and stop when Barney points out a hiding place, present, animal, or activity; press any action button to reveal the friend, open the present, or start the interaction. Five friends, including Baby Bop, and five special prizes can be found, and the end of each level counts what you collected. New players can simply watch the first level until they are ready to take the controller, while more confident players can jump onto higher paths to reach extra puzzles and surprises.

Use the D-pad to move Barney left and right and to guide him through the level’s paths. A, B, and C perform the same child-friendly action: jump, reveal a nearby hidden friend, open a present, or activate a puzzle or scenery interaction when Barney gives a hint. Higher paths are reached by jumping onto simple platforms, and balloons can carry Barney between places. The first level also supports self-play: Barney walks by himself while the child watches, and movement control begins as soon as the player uses the controller. There is no need to memorise separate action buttons.
