How to Play California Games

Quick start

Choose Practice One Event before entering a full competition. Start with Foot Bag to learn the timing window, then try Surfing and the timed obstacle events. California Games contains five events in order: Half-Pipe, Foot Bag, Surfing, Roller Skating, and BMX. Each uses different controls, so practise one at a time. In Half-Pipe, pump for speed before attempting a late turn; in Foot Bag, press the kick button just before the bag reaches your foot; in Surfing, stay near the curl without dropping off the bottom; in Skating and BMX, favour clean jumps over risky tricks until you can finish the course.

Controls

Start pauses. Half-Pipe: press Up while climbing and Down while descending to pump, tap the opposite horizontal direction to spin, A hand-plants at the lip, B changes tracks, and C slows. Foot Bag: move Left/Right, Down turns, B kicks or head-butts, and C performs a super head-butt. Surfing uses Left/Right to steer and C with a direction to slow. Roller Skating uses Up/Down to gain speed; hold B to crouch and release to jump, then Left or Right in the air for spins. BMX uses Up/Down to steer, B to jump, Up+B for a backflip, Down+B for a 360, and repeated C to accelerate.
