How to Play Centurion: Defender of Rome

Quick start

Use the manual’s opening scenario: select the legion in Italia, move it to Alpes, issue an Ultimatum, then choose Go to War when the tribe refuses. Pick Balanced Army and Scipio’s Defense; once battle starts, press C to pause and inspect the formation before resuming. After victory, end the turn and check Rome for rank, money, and the number of legions you may command. Expand with diplomacy when possible, strengthen legions before moving them, and save a password after meaningful progress. Higher rank unlocks more legions and fleets, while chariot races can build wealth and popularity.

Controls

On strategy screens, move the pointer with the D-pad, A selects or moves deeper into a menu, B cancels or moves back, and C shows available ghost legions or fleets. In land battle, C pauses, the D-pad selects a cohort, and A displays or changes its order by choosing a destination. In naval battle, the D-pad steers and changes speed, A fires the forward catapult, B lowers the boarding ramp, and C retreats. In chariot races, Left/Right steers, Down brakes, B whips the horses, A lashes a nearby rival on the left, and C lashes one on the right. Start begins a new game.
