Choose the Farm, Dark Forest or Storm Witch’s Cave from the opening map; the three areas can be tackled in any order. Search each screen for horseshoes, keys and seven coloured magic crystals. A crystal frees only the pony whose picture matches it, while keys open locked routes and horseshoes operate the matching gates. Use the Action button on animals, suspicious scenery and switches rather than simply galloping past them. Easy mode points out objectives, Medium gives hints from animal friends, and Hard scatters ponies and crystals without help, so Easy is the best first tour.

Use the D-pad to gallop left or right and to choose a level or menu item. By default, A and B are Action: rear up, interact, enter a Picture Gate and confront the Storm Witch. C jumps. The Set Up menu offers three control layouts, so Action and Jump may be moved among A, B and C; read the selected layout before play. Start begins the chosen level, pauses or resumes during play, and exits Set Up. Jumping covers ground quickly, while Action should be tried near creatures, objects and gates.
