Choose Practice for a first attempt: it gives Mickey five power spheres and limits the quest to three worlds and three Rainbow Gems. Move to Normal when you are ready for all five worlds and seven Gems needed to rescue Minnie. Use a bounce attack rather than walking into enemies, collect throwable apples, marbles, and candles, and keep some ammunition for guardians and breakable obstacles. Run before long gaps, hold Jump for extra height, and use enemies as springboards to reach high items. Stars refill power, Mouse Ears add a try, and ropes let Mickey cross pits when he jumps to grab them.

Use Left or Right to move, Down to duck, and a horizontal direction in the air to extend a jump. A or B throws a carried item. C jumps; hold it for a higher jump. While above an enemy, press C again or Down before landing to perform the bounce attack. Press a direction twice or keep moving to run faster, then press C for a long jump. Jump into a rope with C and press C again to release. Start skips story screens, confirms transitions, and pauses or resumes. Underwater, C swims upward. The Options screen can change the A/B/C layout, so these are the normal settings.
