How to Play NHL 97
Quick start
Select Exhibition, Season, Playoffs, Tournament, or Shootout, choose teams and rules, then win the faceoff and establish possession. Use short passes and one-timers rather than carrying through traffic, cycle fresh lines, and defend the slot before chasing the puck. The redesigned 16-bit engine rewards deliberate positioning and well-timed checks.
Controls
D-pad: skate, choose menu items, and aim passes or shots. In the standard Genesis layout, B passes or changes to the nearest skater, C shoots or body-checks, and A dumps the puck or uses the defensive stick action; holding the goalie-control button takes over the goalie. Start pauses. Exact secondary actions depend on the selected controller configuration, so consult the in-game Controls screen after launching.
