How to Play Genghis Khan

Quick start

Choose Mongol Conquest for the clearest introduction and leave the difficulty near the middle while learning. In Temujin's first turns, use Labor to preserve food production while creating enough troops, then check that gold can cover troop pay and that an attacking army has provisions. Train weakened ruler abilities before they block important commands. When declaring war, keep the command unit protected, bring enough food for the planned battle length and defeat the enemy commander rather than chasing every detachment. Never leave the ruler's home country without defenders, because losing that headquarters can end the campaign.

Controls

D-pad moves the cursor, changes numeric digits, places units and selects movement or attack directions on the hex map. A confirms commands, numbers and destinations. B cancels or reverses a choice; when a Yes/No prompt is shown, B acts as No. START begins the game. For numbers, use Up/Down to change the current digit, Right to advance to the next place, Left to return one place, then A to enter the completed value. In multiplayer, players 1 and 3 use Controller I while players 2 and 4 use Controller II.

Genghis Khan — About this game

Genghis Khan is Koei's historical turn-based strategy game for NES. Mongol Conquest begins in 1175 with Temujin leading one of fourteen tribes and continues into World Conquest after Mongolia is unified; the broader scenario can also begin with one of four rulers and supports up to four players. Every year is divided into spring, summer, fall and winter turns. Domestic and foreign commands cover labor assignment, trade, training, appointments, diplomacy, marriage, succession and war, while battles move cavalry, infantry and archers across a hex map. Gold pays troops, food sustains both the population and armies, morale affects unrest, and an aging ruler without an heir can end an otherwise successful empire.
