How to Play Gunstar Heroes
Quick start
Press START at the title, choose START in the mode menu and confirm. Select Free Shot for firing while moving, choose a weapon, then choose an opening stage; selection screens confirm with 2. Use 1 to shoot and 2 to jump. Stand on a dropped heart or weapon and press down + 1 to pick it up.
Controls
Default layout: D-pad moves and aims, down crouches; 1 shoots or throws a nearby enemy, 2 jumps. Down + 1 picks up a grounded weapon or heart. Up while jumping can catch suitable overhead supports; up + 2 climbs from a hanging position. Tap START for weapon selection; hold START to pause. The options include button configuration.
Gunstar Heroes — About this game
Gunstar Heroes puts Red in a side-scrolling fight against the empire’s forces. Before setting off, you choose a shooting style, a weapon and one of three opening stages. Free Shot allows movement while firing, whereas Fixed Shot anchors Red for aiming, so that first decision changes how you approach enemies. Running, jumping, hanging from overhead supports and close-range throws give the action more options than firing straight ahead. Hearts and weapons on the ground must be picked up, making safe positioning important even when a useful item is nearby. Watch the vitality display during sustained fights and avoid being trapped against a screen edge. Learn one route with a familiar weapon first, then revisit the other stage choices and practise changing weapons without confusing a short START press with a pause.
