How to Play The Chessmaster
Quick start
Press START at the credits to open the board. White moves first. Move the hand with the D-pad, press 1 to pick up a piece, move to a legal square and press 1 to release it. Use START for options and Teaching mode when learning legal moves.
Controls
D-pad: move the hand or menu marker. 1: pick up/release a piece, confirm an option or close a message. 2: enter Takeback/Replay. START: switch between board and options or leave Takeback/Replay. At promotion, 1 cycles pieces and START confirms.
The Chessmaster — About this game
The Chessmaster brings a full chessboard to Game Gear, with a hand cursor for choosing and moving pieces. Your aim is checkmate: attack the opposing king while leaving it no legal escape, and keep your own king safe. Start with a simple opening that develops pieces rather than moving the same pawn repeatedly. Teaching mode shows legal destinations for the selected piece, making it useful when learning how the pieces move. The options are available from the board, and Takeback/Replay lets you examine the sequence of play. Whether facing the computer or another person, look at the opponent’s threat before committing to a capture; gaining one piece is less useful if it exposes your king.
