How to Play Crystalis

Quick start

Leave the opening cave and enter the nearby Valley of Wind village. Speak with the residents and elder to receive the Sword of Wind, then use B for close attacks. Hold B until Force has charged and release it when you need range instead of standing beside a dangerous enemy. Open the subscreen with Select to equip swords, armor, shields, items, and magic; once a spell is equipped, A casts it during play. If a monster resists your current blade or the route appears blocked, reconsider the sword's element and environmental function rather than assuming every newer sword is a universal upgrade. Save from the system screen while in a town or on the field. Menu and character names shown in this Japanese ROM may not match wording from English Crystalis guides exactly.

Controls

D-pad: move the hero and move menu cursors. B: attack with the equipped sword; hold B to charge Force, then release for the sword's available charged attack. B can also use the equipped item in applicable situations, and discards an item on the subscreen. A: cast the equipped magic during action and select or toggle equipment on the subscreen. Select: open or close the item/equipment subscreen. Start: open or close the status screen; from the subscreen, enter the system screen used for saving and loading. These inputs were checked against the Japanese Famicom control guide and the manual for the same game's North American Crystalis release; localized names and text can differ.

Crystalis — About this game

God Slayer: Haruka Tenku no Sonata is SNK's 1990 Famicom action RPG, known through its localized NES release as Crystalis. Set long after civilization has collapsed, it begins with a hero awakening from cryogenic sleep and reaching the village in the Valley of Wind before opposing the Draygonia empire and seeking four sages. Combat happens in real time from an overhead view: the four swords of wind, fire, water, and thunder interact differently with enemies and also open routes by breaking rock, melting ice, or creating crossings. Holding the sword button builds Force for stronger ranged attacks, while eight spells, equipment, experience levels, towns, caves, and field exploration shape the larger journey. This record runs the Japanese Famicom game, so its Japanese text, names, and some presentation differ from the North American Crystalis localization even where the core adventure and controls correspond.
