How to Play Gomoku Narabe Renju
Quick start
Choose Beginner first and treat the automatic three-stone setup as your starting position, not as moves you missed. On every turn, scan the opponent's horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines before extending your own; an opposing four demands an immediate block. Beginner's blinking stones call attention to open-three or open-four patterns, so use them to learn how threats develop. When playing Black, inspect the new intersections your move would create and avoid double-threes, double-fours, and six-stone lines. A draw replays that game, while the complete match lasts six games.
Controls
D-pad: move the board cursor. SELECT: cycle through Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and two-player modes on the title menu. START: begin the selected mode; pause or unpause during play. A: confirm a choice or place a stone at the cursor. B: resign the current game. In two-player mode, Controller I handles Black and moves first, while Controller II handles White.
Gomoku Narabe Renju — About this game
Gomoku Narabe Renju is Nintendo's 1983 Famicom adaptation of competitive five-in-a-row. Each round begins from a prescribed three-stone opening, after which Black and White alternate placements and race to connect five horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Black loses by playing a double-three, double-four, or an overline of six or more before completing five; White has no such forbidden moves. The solo game offers Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced settings: Beginner flashes tactical warnings, Intermediate removes them, and Advanced adds a clock. A fourth mode supports two players, and the overall session is decided after six games.
