How to Play Starship Hector

Quick start

Select Normal to learn the opening history. Use B against flying attackers and A against ground emplacements; if a target survives, check which weapon can reach it before moving closer. Bomb the supply points and collect the capsules without chasing them through incoming fire. In side view, keep space from walls and use the bomb's downward arc for lower targets. Try the two-minute option for repeated opening practice, then the five-minute score mode.

Controls

D-pad: move the ship. A: cluster/Craster bombs, attacking ground targets in vertical stages and dropping down-right in horizontal stages. B: photon/Sparkle Gun, firing upward in vertical view or rightward in side view. Start: begin or pause/resume. Select: title or mode selection; the title also provides a score-record screen through Select.

Starship Hector — About this game

This entry covers the Japanese Famicom release of Hector '87. Hector '87 builds its challenge around two weapons and changing perspectives. Odd-numbered histories scroll vertically, where the B-button gun attacks airborne threats and A-button bombs hit ground targets. Even-numbered histories switch to side view, with forward shots and downward-arching bombs creating different attack paths. Your ship has an energy gauge rather than losing a life to every bullet, but terrain collisions remain dangerous. Bombing particular supply objects releases recovery capsules, making their positions worth learning. Alongside the six-stage Normal game, timed two- and five-minute competitions offer shorter score attempts. Success depends on handling targets early and preserving a safe route to supplies.
