How to Play Fist of the North Star

Quick start

Choose 1PLAYER with SELECT and begin with START. Get used to up for jumping and A/B for punches and kicks before approaching projectile enemies. Collect Abeshi drops to build Kenshiro's abilities. When the path stops making progress, look for a doorway and hold A+B while pressing up to change routes. Remember the entrances you have tried rather than repeatedly following the same loop.

Controls

Left/right: move; up: jump; down: crouch. A: punch; B: kick. At an entrance, hold A and B together and press up to move into the background route. SELECT: choose 1PLAYER/2PLAYER at the title. START: begin and pause/resume. Additional movement and attack abilities become available as Kenshiro gains stars.

Fist of the North Star — About this game

The original Famicom Hokuto no Ken is more than a straightforward march through enemy crowds. Doors connect different stretches of each area, turning progress into a search for the right route as well as a test of combat timing. Certain defeated enemies release the Abeshi word bubble; collecting it adds a star and develops Kenshiro's movement and fighting abilities through seven levels. Punches and kicks have separate buttons, while jumping uses the directional pad. Familiar opponents including Heart, Shin, Jagi, Souther, and Raoh stand between Kenshiro and the captive Yuria. This is the Japanese 1986 Famicom game, not the Master System adaptation or the later NES sequel released in English.
