How to Play Home Alone

Quick start

Press START and learn the exits from the foyer before the burglars close in. Use A near a trap item to pick it up, SELECT to choose what you carry, and B to place it on a pursuit route. Keep a spare trap for vulnerable stair sections. Check Kevin and deployed traps on the START map. If hiding, begin before either burglar enters and move on after a short respite instead of waiting in one spot.

Controls

Left/right: move; diagonal directions: follow stairs; up: climb or hide at a hiding place when the room has no burglar; down: climb down. A: collect a trap; B: set the selected trap; SELECT: cycle carried items, up to three. START: begin, or pause and show the map; press another key to resume. Above a chandelier, down+A drops it if Kevin carries fewer than three items.

Home Alone — About this game

NES Home Alone turns the McCallister house into a timed escape challenge. Kevin must avoid capture until the police arrive, moving between the house, basement, and tree-house routes while the two burglars search for him. Household objects can be collected and set as traps, but he can carry only three at once. A successful trap buys time rather than permanently removing a pursuer, and used traps need resetting while they remain available. Hiding can help only briefly and must begin while no burglar is in the room. Planning escape routes, saving an item for the stairs, and checking the pause map are more useful than treating this as a conventional jump-and-shoot platformer.
