How to Play Hon Shougi: Naitou 9 Dan Shougi Hiden

Quick start

For a straightforward first match, leave the title settings at no handicap, human first, and no time limit, then press START. Move the hand cursor to one of your pieces, press A, choose its destination, and press A again. B returns a lifted piece before you commit. Wait for the robot's reply; pressing buttons does not speed its thinking. Watch your king as well as possible captures.

Controls

D-pad: move the hand cursor or change the promotion choice. A: lift/place a piece and confirm promotion. B: return a held piece; when holding nothing on your turn, press repeatedly to request a takeback of the last pair of moves. SELECT: cycle title settings; START: begin. After a result, START or SELECT returns to the title; neither pauses ordinary play.

Hon Shougi: Naitou 9 Dan Shougi Hiden — About this game

Hon Shougi puts the board at the center of a single-player match. The human and robot figures beside it give the otherwise restrained presentation some personality. Before play, you can vary who moves first, whether time is limited, and the starting material; these are not selectable computer skill levels. Captured pieces remain useful because they can return to the board on your side. The unusual takeback requires repeated requests, so it is better to inspect a destination before committing. This is a playable opponent, not a set of graded lessons or a two-player chess program.
