How to Play Hototogisu
Quick start
Choose a new campaign with SELECT and begin with START. Pick a starting clan and complete the displayed setup using the D-pad and A. Before expanding, inspect your province, treasury and neighbouring forces with SELECT at the start of your turn or a phase. Follow the annual phase order: improve the home economy, consider troop expenses during taxation, then use the movement and war opportunities. Avoid spending the whole treasury before military preparations.
Controls
D-pad: select provinces, commands and numeric amounts. A: confirm an order or advance messages; B: cancel. SELECT: switch start/continue at the title, or open the inspection mode at the beginning of phases and player turns. START: start the game. Battles use menus for formations and orders, not direct action controls.
Hototogisu — About this game
Hototogisu treats conquest as a sequence of commitments rather than unrestricted orders on a map. Taxation must support retainers and troops, domestic measures affect provincial strength, and repeated mobilization and battle phases require planning ahead. Field battles involve formations, reserves, firearms and morale; taking a castle can instead mean siege, assault or negotiation. Commanders matter for different jobs, so simply purchasing more soldiers is not the whole strategy. This is the original Famicom war simulation, not the later Hototogisu card games.
