How to Play Karate Champ
Quick start
Use SELECT to choose 1 player or 2 players, then press START. For a low-pressure rehearsal, the manual suggests selecting two players and leaving the second fighter idle. While facing right, try A for a lunge punch, right+A for a front kick and down+A for a sweep to the right. Hold the attack long enough to complete it. Watch the referee's points, not a health gauge, and aim for two match points to take a round.
Controls
SELECT chooses the player count; START begins play. The directional pad moves the fighter: up jumps, down squats, and moving away can block an incoming attack. Combine directions with A, B or A+B for moves. Facing right: A is a lunge punch, B a back kick, right+A a front kick, up+A a jumping kick, and down+A a right foot sweep. Down+A+B performs a low punch; left/right+A+B leaps in that direction. Facing left changes several A/B attack assignments, so consult the manual's left-facing chart. Hold inputs long enough for the move to register.
Karate Champ — About this game
Karate Champ turns each bout into a contest for clean scoring hits rather than a race to empty a health bar. In single-player mode, your white-clad fighter faces a red computer opponent; two-player mode lets another person take the opposite side. A round ends when someone reaches two match points or its 30-second limit expires, and taking two rounds wins the match. Punches, sweeps and kicks also earn separate score points, which matter when match points are tied. The NES controls combine the directional pad with A, B or both buttons, so spacing and learning the move chart are essential. Between matches, the winner can score extra points by striking incoming objects. Practice a few reliable attacks before attempting faster combinations.
