How to Play M.C. Kids

Quick start

At the opening selection screen, jump into the Mick Mack’er to switch character. Leave to the left for one player or to the right for two; START also begins a solo game. Learn to pick up a block with B beside it, or Down+B while standing on it, then press B to throw it at an enemy. A jumps; crouching just before jumping helps you reach higher. On the world map, stand on a level’s arch and press A to enter. Look for puzzle cards as you explore and return them to the world’s character when you have enough to continue.

Controls

Left/Right: move, including in mid-air. Down: crouch. A: jump; crouch first for a higher jump, or jump while running for more distance. B: pick up or throw an object. Stand on an object and use Down+B to lift it; while carrying one, Up+B throws upward and Down+B throws straight down. B also digs through sand and opens a zipper when standing in front of it. START pauses. START followed by SELECT abandons the current attempt and starts with a new character, so it is not a harmless menu shortcut. On the map, A enters a level.

M.C. Kids — About this game

Mick and Mack enter McDonaldland to recover Ronald McDonald’s stolen Bag of Magic. The journey is built around exploration: clearing a stage opens the route onwards, but each world’s resident also needs a set number of puzzle cards before letting you leave. Some cards belong to another world, giving you a reason to revisit places rather than treat every exit as the end of your search. Blocks are tools as well as weapons. Carrying one can activate a heavy springboard, and throwing special blocks into marked outlines creates routes to new areas. Other devices reverse gravity or return you to the start of a level, turning familiar ground into part of a puzzle. You can choose either child in a solo game or take turns with another player. Learning how jumping, momentum and throwing work is more useful than expecting to defeat enemies by landing on them.
