How to Play MagMax

Quick start

Choose one or two players with SELECT on the title screen, then press START. Move with the directional pad and fire with either A or B. Collect nearby head and leg parts when it is safe, and look for the wave beam gun to deal with tougher structures. Start by getting comfortable on the surface, watching the robot’s base rather than assuming every shot near its head will hit. Enter a warp hole to try the underground route; leave more room around the fully assembled robot there. START pauses and resumes the action.

Controls

Directional pad: move in eight directions. A or B: fire the beam gun. SELECT: choose one-player or two-player play at the title screen. START: begin, pause and resume. Enter a warp hole to change between the surface and underground; there is no separate layer-change button. Head, leg and wave-gun parts are collected along the route, not selected from a transformation menu. A and B are both firing buttons, not separate shot and bomb controls.

MagMax — About this game

MagMax combines a scrolling shooting game with a robot you assemble as you travel. The starting craft can collect a head, legs and a wave beam gun, adding firepower and a little protection: attached parts can break off when hit instead of immediately costing you a life. Warp holes link two parallel routes with different enemies and perspectives. On the surface, the apparent height of the robot is misleading, so watch its base when judging incoming fire. Underground, the whole assembled machine becomes a much taller target, even though the extra shots cover a wider area. The wave weapon also behaves differently between these layers, encouraging you to learn what each setup can do. Forest, desert, sea and automated-city scenery lead to encounters with Babylon. Finishing a circuit starts another loop rather than a story ending, making survival and repeated improvement the main challenge.
