How to Play Mario Kart DS
Quick start
Enter a nickname and emblem if prompted, then select SINGLE PLAYER and GRAND PRIX. Start with 50cc, choose a character, kart and the Mushroom Cup. Hold A to accelerate once the race begins. Practise steering first, then try holding R through a bend and collect item boxes along the route.
Controls
D-pad left/right steers; A accelerates; B brakes or reverses. R hops, and holding R while accelerating and turning begins a drift. Alternate left/right during a drift to build sparks, then release R for a Mini-Turbo. L/X uses an item; combine with up/down to direct suitable items forward/backward. Y or the Touch Screen switches map views. START pauses. Menus: A confirms, B returns.
Mario Kart DS — About this game
Mario Kart DS combines kart handling with items that can change the order of a race in seconds. Grand Prix cups test consistency across several tracks, while Time Trials remove the pack and make each corner a chance to improve a record. The course selection mixes new tracks with returning circuits, so learning their bends and hazards matters as much as choosing a character and kart. Drifting builds sparks that can turn into a short boost, and the lower screen helps reveal nearby opponents and items. Missions offer specific driving challenges beyond ordinary racing. Holding a defensive item behind the kart can protect a lead, but knowing when to attack is just as important when chasing the next position.
