Kujaku Ou alternates side-scrolling combat with illustrated adventure scenes. Kujaku investigates attacks on temples, talks to witnesses and examines places for the objects needed to move the story forward. Looking at an item identifies it before you can take it, so revisiting a scene with a new clue can be more useful than rushing into another fight. In action scenes, Ki shots and jumps handle ordinary enemies, while selected spells provide stronger attacks or useful movement powers. Strength measures survival and energy pays for magic; blue and orange drops replenish different resources. The Pause status screen lets you equip an action spell, then down+1 casts it. Passwords are obtained through a spell in adventure scenes and preserve possessions and powers. Read dialogue carefully, keep track of what each character needs and use magic when basic shots cannot solve the obstacle.
