How to Play Metal Gear

Quick start

Choose START on the title screen and press the START button. Observe the guards as you move through the opening jungle. Until you find a weapon, B provides a punch; search trucks and storage rooms for equipment rather than expecting a starting gun. Press SELECT to open the command menu, choose WEAPON or EQUIP. with the D-pad, and press A. Highlight the item you need and press SELECT to return with it selected. When CALL appears, open TRCVR to hear the message. After a game over, END reveals a password to record. To resume later, choose CONTINUE on the title screen and enter the code supplied by this European version.

Controls

D-pad moves Snake and navigates menus. A uses the equipped weapon and confirms commands; it also activates certain inventory items such as rations. B punches. START begins or pauses play. SELECT switches START/CONTINUE at the title and opens command mode during play. Select WEAPON, EQUIP., or TRCVR with the D-pad and A; choose weapons/items with the D-pad and leave with SELECT. In the radio screen, Left/Right tunes the frequency and Up sends a call. These are original NES inputs, not the extra pause controls added by modern collections.

Metal Gear — About this game

Metal Gear on NES asks you to build an infiltration plan rather than start every encounter with a firefight. Snake enters enemy territory with little equipment, so trucks and storehouses become essential places to search. Cards open matching doors, while rescued prisoners and radio messages supply information that weapons cannot. Saving prisoners also raises your rank, improving survival and carrying capacity. Keep track of ammunition and rations before entering another dangerous stretch. This is the NES adventure with a jungle insertion and its own layout, not the MSX2 route. If you attract attention, guards attack aggressively; changing screens can return the game to its infiltration state. The European release uses passwords for later sessions, making it worth recording the code from your own copy instead of relying on a code intended for another region.
