How to Play Metal Storm
Quick start
Begin a new game and use the opening section to practice moving with left/right, jumping with A, and firing by holding B. Press Up+A to fall toward the ceiling. Once you have landed there, Down+A brings you back toward the floor. You can initiate a flip while airborne, but must land before flipping again. Use that change of route to get past obstacles rather than jumping at every threat from below. After a game over, press START, choose CONTINUE with the Control Pad, and press START again. Record the password displayed after a stage clear.
Controls
Left/right: move. Up/down: aim vertically; Down also crouches. A: jump, with height affected by how long you hold it. B: fire continuously while held; use the Control Pad to direct shots. Up+A: reverse gravity toward the ceiling. Down+A: restore the pull toward the floor. An airborne flip is possible, but another flip requires landing first. START during play: pause. The Japanese original manual marks SELECT as unused; do not apply the overseas manual's SELECT title-menu instruction to this edition.
Metal Storm — About this game
Metal Storm makes room layout part of the combat. A ceiling that seems out of reach can become your next floor when the M-308 reverses gravity, opening a different approach to a dangerous passage. Movement, jumping, and shooting still matter, but deciding which surface to use can be more useful than rushing straight ahead. The weapon pickups encourage another choice: a wider shot, a defensive shield, or an attack that turns a gravity flip into an offensive move. Only one of those three upgrades can be equipped at a time, while armor offers protection from a hit. Stages have a time limit on the approach to the boss, and passwords preserve your stage-clear progress and equipment. This entry is the Japanese Famicom release; it should not be confused with a modern reissue or treated as having every overseas title-screen control.
