How to Play Goal!

Quick start

Select one or two players, press START, then choose a competition and side with the directional pad and A. In World Cup, first practise carrying the ball into space and passing with direction+B. Use direction+A when a longer ball or a shot is needed. Once the other side takes possession, tap B to select another defender before closing down the attack. Note the game's World Cup password for a later Continue session.

Controls

Directional pad: run, dribble and navigate menus. A: confirm a menu choice. With possession, direction+B makes a pass and direction+A shoots or plays a long ball. After a kick, hold B and a direction to shape its flight; Up adds distance, Down adds backspin to slow the ball, and sideways input bends it. Without possession, B changes the selected player and direction+A makes a sliding tackle. Use direction+B for a throw-in. START proceeds from the one-/two-player choice.

Goal! — About this game

The original Goal! presents football from an angled overhead view that scrolls with the action. The visible area makes it useful to think ahead about where a pass will go, while switching defenders matters when an opponent breaks through. Its long kicks are not fixed trajectories: you can bend the ball after contact or alter its travel with backspin. The main World Cup brings together sixteen national sides, with group matches leading towards the final. For shorter sessions there is a club tournament and a shooting challenge. A second player can join your team in the World Cup or tournament, so two-player football does not always have to mean competing against each other; VS provides that separate option. Passwords preserve World Cup progress. Begin by learning the difference between a short pass and a long kick, then practise selecting the defender best placed to challenge the ball.
