How to Play Stinger

Quick start

Use SELECT to choose one or two players, then press START. The opening stage scrolls sideways: fire B at approaching enemies and use A's upward heart shot to work the clouds and bells above you. Try collecting a blue bell for speed or a white bell for twin cannons, but do not chase an upgrade through enemy fire. When a stage changes to overhead scrolling, switch your habits: B shoots airborne targets and A drops bombs on the ground. Watch the landing sight for those bombs. Defeat the boss at the end of the stage to continue.

Controls

Directional pad: fly in eight directions. In horizontal stages, B fires the main weapon and drops bombs; A fires an upward heart shot for clouds and bells. In vertical stages, B fires the main weapon and A drops ground bombs. START begins and pauses play. SELECT chooses one or two players on the title screen and is unused during combat. These instructions are for the North American NES release, which supports two simultaneous players rather than the Japanese version's three.

Stinger — About this game

The Attackons have kidnapped Professor Cinnamon, and your Stinger squadron must break through seven stages to bring him back. This NES shooter alternates horizontal and vertical scrolling, changing how you divide your attention between flying enemies, ground targets and power-up bells. Bells released from clouds can be shot repeatedly until their color changes; collect one when it offers the upgrade you want instead of blindly shooting every bell. A blue bell raises speed and a white one adds twin cannons. In horizontal stages, the upward heart shot helps keep bells in play while your main weapon handles threats ahead. Overhead stages give the secondary button a different job: bombing the ground. There are bosses to defeat before moving on, and simultaneous two-player play adds the challenge of sharing the screen while building up both fighters.
