How to Play Monster Truck Rally

Quick start

On the MONSTER MENU, use Up/Down and A to choose EVENTS. Pick HILL CLIMB, then set HOW MANY TRUCKS to one and select GO RACE for practice. Hold A to accelerate. At maximum speed, briefly release and press A again to shift up. Steer with Left/Right and use B to slow before difficult terrain. Let the truck drop into a lower gear as it slows, then build speed again after mud or a climb.

Controls

Left/Right: rotate the truck left/right, relative to its heading. Hold A: accelerate. Briefly release and press A again at top speed: shift to the next higher gear. B: brake; when stopped, reverse slowly. START: pause. Hold SELECT for about a second: abandon the current event and go to its score screen. Menu Up/Down selects an item; A confirms.

Monster Truck Rally — About this game

Monster Truck Rally mixes racing with specialist events rather than treating every course as a flat sprint. Hill climbs, drag races, water, car crushing, towing and moving drawbridges reward different approaches. A three-speed transmission gives low gears a purpose on steep or difficult ground, while higher gears suit open straights. The main menu adjusts laps, direction, difficulty and the balance of human and computer trucks. There is also a track builder and a random-course option. Up to four vehicles can compete, but four human drivers on the original NES require the supported multiplayer accessory; choosing four trucks alone does not create four controller inputs.
