How to Play NHL Breakaway 98
Quick start
Choose Practice from the main menu and set the number of home and away players. Use the stick or D-pad to choose options, A to confirm and B to go back. Begin with fewer players to practice A passes and B shots, then try Exhibition. Watch player energy and use line changes rather than leaving one group on the ice throughout.
Controls
Default: stick/D-pad skates. With the puck, A passes, B shoots, C-right uses turbo, C-up dumps the puck and R skates backward; L or Z uses icon passing. On defense, A blocks shots, B poke-checks and C-right boosts/checks. Hold C-left for line changes; C-down switches players with tag mode off. START pauses.
NHL Breakaway 98 — About this game
NHL Breakaway 98 brings team management into its on-ice hockey. Trades and coaching decisions shape the roster, while individual fatigue makes playing time and contact matter during a match. Tired players lose effectiveness, so line changes serve a tactical purpose beyond changing faces. Exhibition, season, playoffs, international competition and shootouts offer different goals. Practice lets you set two to six players on each side, creating room to learn movement or rehearse crowded situations before tackling a full game.
