How to Play Athena

Quick start

Press START at the title. In the forest, use B to kick enemies and break blocks until equipment appears. Compare short and held A jumps, then use the vines to change height. Keep room between yourself and enemies once you obtain a longer-reaching weapon. Watch TIME and break Life Flowers when health is low.

Controls

Left/Right moves; Up/Down climbs vines and ladders, and Down crouches on the ground. A jumps, with a longer press producing a higher leap; combine A with directions underwater or in flight. B kicks or attacks with the current weapon. SELECT displays collected objects and closes that display. START starts and pauses/resumes.

Athena — About this game

Athena leaves her dull castle life to explore Fantasy World, beginning with a kick instead of a ready-made arsenal. Defeated enemies and broken masonry reveal equipment, changing both attack reach and protection. Clubs, chained balls, bows and fire weapons give different ways to handle danger; helmets also let her break blocks from underneath, while shields guard the front. A shell necklace turns her into a mermaid, and Pegasus wings allow flight. Progress depends on more than reaching the right edge: branching routes and hidden objects can determine whether an exit leads onward or sends the journey around again. Keep separate watch on health and the countdown. Smash Life Flowers for healing hearts, and collect hourglasses to extend the available time. The K-mark slate is another important distinction: passing through preserves weapons and treasures for the next stage, whereas destroying it kills Athena and loses those gains. This NES version has eight worlds and a final sequence of returning bosses. It is strictly single-player.
