How to Play Athletic World
Quick start
The original hardware uses a controller in port 1 and Power Pad side A in port 2. Choose TRAINING with SELECT and START, then HURDLES with SELECT and START. Stand on the central forward pads to begin, alternate steps to run, and lift both feet just before a hurdle. Return to the pads after the jump to continue.
Controls
Controller: SELECT chooses a mode/field or enters a highlighted registration character; directions choose characters, A moves the entry cursor right and B left. START begins and pauses/resumes. Power Pad A side: alternate central red pads to run forward, rear pads to retreat, and use an outer side pad with its adjacent red pad to change lane. Pass through the centre when crossing sides. Release the pads to jump; keep feet on the mat and press the front blue pair with hands to crouch. Side logs use one-foot hops. The tunnel disables lane changes/jumps; rafting has no manual forward/back movement.
Athletic World — About this game
The athlete responds to pressure on a floor mat rather than the usual jump button. Alternating steps on the central forward pads makes the runner advance; leaving the pads produces a jump. This turns the five fields into different timing problems: hurdles need well-placed leaps, wild boars demand lane changes, and the tunnel’s slopes need sustained running. On the side logs, progress comes from hopping on one foot. The rafting course instead carries the athlete forward while the player avoids rocks, jumps low logs and crouches beneath high ones.
Training lets you select a single field. Beginner links all five, moving on even when a field runs out of time; Expert repeats them with extra creatures, longer later rounds and night scenes until time expires. The turtle at the bottom marks the time limit, which changes with the entered age and sex. Finishing a complete circuit leads to an evaluation and certificate. This American NES version uses the eight-pad A side of the Power Pad; the regular controller handles menus and registration, rather than replacing the mat’s course actions.
